How the Rent Tax Credit Works
What is the Rent Tax Credit?
A non-refundable tax credit introduced in Budget 2022, reducing Income Tax liability. Increased from €500 (2022) to €1,000 (2024-2025). Requires RTB-registered tenancy as principal private residence.
Shared Tenancy Rules
Each tenant on the RTB register claims the FULL credit. A 4-person house gets €4,000 total relief — not pro-rated.
Multi-Year Lookback Strategy
4-year lookback: claim 2022-2025 at once. 2022 credit (€500) expires 31 Dec 2026. Total potential: up to €3,250 for single, €6,500 for married.
