Frequently Asked Questions
Irish statutory redundancy is 2 weeks' pay per year of service (over age 16) plus 1 bonus week. Weekly pay is capped at €600. You must have at least 104 weeks (2 years) continuous service to qualify.
Statutory redundancy pay in Ireland is generally exempt from income tax, USC, and PRSI. Enhanced/contractual redundancy payments may be taxable depending on the amount and circumstances.
With the €600 weekly cap, maximum statutory redundancy for 20 years service is €600 × (20 × 2 + 1) = €24,600. There is no statutory service cap, but the €600/week cap limits the total.
Statutory redundancy is exempt from USC and PRSI. Enhanced payments may be subject to tax, USC, and PRSI depending on how they are structured by your employer.
Many Irish employers offer enhanced redundancy packages — commonly 3–5 weeks per year of service. This is discretionary unless stated in your employment contract.
Statutory minimum notice is 1 week per year of service (up to 8 weeks). Your contract may specify a longer period. Payment in lieu of notice is fully taxable.
All continuous service from age 16 counts. There is no upper service cap (unlike the UK's 20-year limit). Part-time service is pro-rated.
Redundancy pay may affect Jobseeker's Benefit. You should apply for your redundancy lump sum first, then claim Jobseeker's Benefit if you remain unemployed.
From age 50, you may be able to access your occupational pension if your scheme allows early retirement. Standard PRSA/Personal Pension access is from age 60.
You can apply to the Department of Social Protection for statutory redundancy if your employer refuses or cannot pay. The Insolvency Payments Scheme also covers certain unpaid entitlements.
Weekly pay is your average gross weekly earnings over the 104 weeks before redundancy (capped at €600). Regular overtime, shift premiums, and bonuses may be included.
The Redundancy Rebate Scheme allows employers to claim back 60% of statutory redundancy payments (plus 50% of the lump sum) from the Social Insurance Fund.
