The Revenue Online Service (ROS) is the central platform for managing your tax affairs in Ireland if you are self-employed, a sole trader, company director, or tax agent. From filing your Form 11 to managing VAT, RCT, and PAYE payroll — ROS handles it all. This guide covers registration, key functions, and tips to avoid common pitfalls. Use our Tax Back Predictor to check if you are due a refund.
What Is ROS?
ROS is Revenue's secure web portal for tax administration. It was launched in the early 2000s and has since become the primary channel for tax filing in Ireland. Over 95% of tax returns are now filed electronically through ROS or myAccount.

ROS vs myAccount
One of the most common questions is whether you need ROS or myAccount. The answer depends on your tax status.
| Feature | myAccount | ROS |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | PAYE employees only | Self-employed, companies, agents |
| Tax return | Form 12 (simple) | Form 11 (full self-assessment) |
| VAT returns | No | Yes |
| RCT | No | Yes |
| PAYE payroll | No | Yes |
| Tax clearance (eTCC) | Limited (PAYE only) | Full (all tax heads) |
| Digital certificate | Phone / email OTP | Computer / mobile cert required |
| Corporation tax | No | Yes |
Note: If you are both a PAYE employee and self-employed (common for contractors with a day job), you need both myAccount (for your employee tax credits) and ROS (for your self-assessment Form 11, VAT, etc.). They are separate logins.
How to Register for ROS
Registering for ROS requires a digital certificate. Here is the process:
Go to ros.ie
Click "Register for ROS". You will need your PPSN (personal) or CRO number (company), Revenue tax reference, and email address.
Verify your identity
Revenue sends a verification code to your registered address (by post) — this takes 5-7 working days. Enter the code on ROS to proceed.
Download digital certificate
Install the ROS digital certificate on your computer or mobile device. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Back it up — losing the cert means re-registering.
Log in and start filing
Use your digital certificate to log in. You can now access all ROS services: Form 11, VAT, RCT, PAYE, eTCC, and MyEnquiries.
Key Functions on ROS
Form 11 — Self-Assessment Return
The annual income tax return for self-employed individuals. ROS pre-populates known data (PAYE income, deposits interest, dividend details). You add self-employment income and expenses, rental income, capital gains, and claim reliefs.
Deadline: 31 October (2026) for paper returns; mid-November for ROS e-filers.
Payments: Preliminary tax due by 31 October. Balance due by 31 October (or 31 December if using ROS).
VAT Returns
File your bi-monthly, quarterly, or annual VAT returns through ROS. The system calculates output vs input VAT automatically.
Schedule: Bi-monthly (default), due by 23rd of month after period end.
Payment: Direct debit, online banking, or debit/credit card through ROS.
Cash accounting: Available for businesses under 2m turnover — pay when your customer pays you.
RCT (Relevant Contracts Tax)
Principal contractors use ROS to deduct RCT from subcontractor payments and file RCT returns. Subcontractors use ROS to view their deduction history.
RCT rates: 0% (C2 card holder), 20% (registered without clearance), 35% (non-compliant).
Returns: RCT return filed within 14 days of the end of each month.
PAYE Payroll
Employers file P30 (monthly PAYE return), P35 (annual return), P45, and P60 forms through ROS. The system integrates with payroll software.
P30: Due by 14th of each month (or 23rd for e-filers).
P35: Annual return due by 23 February of the following year.
Tax Clearance (eTCC)
Apply for and download your electronic Tax Clearance Certificate. Share the access code with grant bodies, contractors, or licensing authorities.
The eTCC is valid for 12 months and can be checked online by third parties.
MyEnquiries
Revenue's secure messaging system. Use MyEnquiries to: ask tax questions, upload documents, respond to Revenue queries, request statements, and manage your tax affairs without calling or visiting.
Revenue typically responds within 5-10 working days. Keep all correspondence for your records.

Common ROS Issues & Solutions
Digital certificate expired
Certificates expire every 3 years. Renew through ROS before expiry. If it expires, you must re-register and go through the verification process again. Set a calendar reminder for renewal.
Certificate not working on new device
The digital certificate is device-specific. You cannot simply copy it to a new computer. Export the certificate from your old device (ROS provides export instructions) or request a replacement.
Forgotten ROS password
Use the "Forgot Password" feature on the ROS login page. You need your digital certificate and PPSN to reset. If you have lost both password and certificate, call Revenue's ROS helpline.
Pre-populated data wrong
ROS pre-populates data from Revenue records (PAYE, interest, dividends). If the data is incorrect (e.g., missing or wrong), you can override it on your Form 11. Attach a note explaining the discrepancy through MyEnquiries.
