Rent Tax Credit Ireland 2026: How to Claim Up to €1,000 (€2,000 for Couples)
If you're renting in Ireland, you may be entitled to claim back up to €1,000 per year through the Rent Tax Credit. For couples assessed jointly, that's €2,000. The credit is refundable — meaning you get the money even if your tax bill is lower than the credit. Use our Rent Tax Credit Calculator to check your eligibility.
How Much Can You Claim?
| Your Situation | Maximum Credit | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Single person renting | €1,000 | Must be your principal private residence |
| Married/Couple (Joint Assessment) | €2,000 | Both named on tenancy agreement |
| Sharing with flatmates | Up to €1,000 each | Each tenant claims individually, must be on tenancy |
Key point: The credit is refundable. If your total income tax liability for the year is €500, you'll still receive the full €1,000 — €500 reduces your tax bill and €500 is paid directly to you as a refund.
Eligibility Requirements
Private Residential Tenancy
You must be renting a private residential property. Local authority tenants (social housing) may also qualify. The property must be your principal residence.
RTB Registration
Your tenancy must be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). This is your landlord's legal responsibility. If it's not registered, ask your landlord to register before you claim.
You Pay the Rent
You must be the person paying the rent. If your employer pays your rent as a benefit-in-kind, you cannot claim the credit on that portion.
No Upper Income Limit
Unlike some tax credits, the Rent Tax Credit has no income threshold. High earners are equally eligible as long as they meet the tenancy conditions.
How to Apply — 3 Simple Steps
- 1
Log into myAccount
Go to revenue.ie and sign into myAccount. If you don't have an account, register using your PPS number.
- 2
Navigate to Rent Tax Credit
Go to "Review Your Tax" → "Complete Your Income Tax Return" → "Tax Credits & Reliefs" → "Rent Tax Credit".
- 3
Enter your tenancy details
Provide your RTB registration number, landlord details, property address, and the rent paid. Revenue verifies the tenancy with the RTB database in real time.
💡 Tip: If your tenancy was registered late, you can still claim the credit from the date your tenancy started — not just from the registration date. Keep a copy of your lease agreement as evidence.
