Log into myAccount
Go to Revenue.ie and log into your myAccount. If you don't have an account, registration takes about 10 minutes and requires your PPS number and birth date.
Navigate to "Tax Credits & Reliefs"
Under the "PAYE Services" section, select "Tax Credits & Reliefs" and then "Your Job Expenses." This is where you enter your flat rate expense claim.
Enter Your Occupation and Amount
Select your occupation from the list and enter the flat rate expense amount. Revenue will automatically add the deduction to your tax credit certificate for the current and future years.
Claim Backdated Refunds
Still in myAccount, you can claim for up to 4 previous tax years. Revenue processes these quickly — most refunds arrive within 5-10 working days directly to your bank account.

Important Rules
📋 Flat Rate vs Actual Expenses
You can claim either the flat rate amount or your actual expenses (with receipts) — not both. For most people, the flat rate is higher than what they can prove with receipts, making it the better choice. But if your actual costs are significantly higher, claim the actual expenses instead.
👔 Only One Flat Rate Per Job
You can only claim one flat rate expense per employment. If you hold two jobs (e.g., teaching and nursing), you can claim the flat rate for each job separately. The deduction applies to each employment independently.
📅 Claims Are Per Tax Year
The flat rate expense applies to each full tax year you work in the occupation. If you started mid-year, you can claim the full amount for that year (Revenue doesn't pro-rate flat rate expenses). Once claimed, the relief continues automatically each year unless your circumstances change.
