Emergency Tax Ireland 2026: How to Fix It & Get Your Refund
Emergency tax is one of the most common — and most costly — payroll issues in Ireland. If you've started a new job, returned from a career break, or changed employments, you may be paying 40% PAYE + 8% USC + 4% PRSI on all your income instead of the correct rate. Use our Emergency Tax Calculator to estimate your refund.
How Much Emergency Tax Could You Be Overpaying?
The table below shows the difference between correct USC (what you should pay) and emergency USC (what you're paying on emergency tax). The gap is your potential monthly refund.
| Salary | Correct USC | Emergency USC | Monthly Overpaid |
|---|---|---|---|
| €30,000 | €420 | €12,000 | €11,580 |
| €45,000 | €763 | €18,000 | €17,237 |
| €65,000 | €1,363 | €26,000 | €24,637 |
| €100,000 | €2,413 | €40,000 | €37,587 |
* Emergency tax also overcharges PAYE and PRSI. Use our Emergency Tax Calculator for a full estimate.
Why Emergency Tax Happens
Starting a New Job
When you start a new job, your employer needs a valid RPN from Revenue to apply your correct tax credits and SRCOP. If Revenue doesn't have your updated employment details, they issue an emergency RPN with default emergency rates.
Returning from a Break
If you've been unemployed, on maternity leave, or working abroad, Revenue may not have an active RPN for your current employment. Registering on myAccount when you return to work prevents this.
Multiple Employments
Having two jobs can trigger emergency tax on your second employment if Revenue allocates all your tax credits to your primary job. You need to specify which job gets the credits.
Employer Notification Delay
Even after Revenue issues the correct RPN, your employer's payroll system may take 1-2 pay cycles to apply it. If the delay exceeds two pay periods, contact your payroll department.
How to Fix Emergency Tax — 3 Steps
- 1
Register on myAccount
Go to revenue.ie and log into myAccount. If you don't have an account, register using your PPS number and personal details.
- 2
Confirm your employment
Under "Manage Your Tax", confirm your current employer and job details. Review your tax credits and SRCOP allocation — make sure your full credits are assigned to your main employment.
- 3
Wait for updated RPN
Revenue will issue an updated RPN to your employer, typically within 1-2 working days. Your next payslip should then use the correct cumulative basis. If not, contact Revenue through myAccount.
💡 Tip: If you're on emergency tax for more than 2 pay periods after fixing your details on myAccount, contact Revenue directly through the myAccount messaging service.
