Pension contributions reduce your taxable income and can lower USC exposure for high earners.
Minister for Finance announces tax band changes, USC adjustments, and credit increases.
New standard rate bands, tax credits, and USC thresholds take effect.
Carbon tax increase takes effect (if announced).
PRSI rate may increase from 4.0% to 4.35% for certain employees.
The standard rate band is the amount of income taxed at 20%. In Budget 2026, it increased by €2,000 to €44,000 (single). Income above this is taxed at 40%. This is the single biggest factor in your take-home pay change.
The Universal Social Charge has four bands. Budget 2026 expanded the 2% band ceiling from €25,760 to €28,700 and reduced the middle band rate from 4.5% to 3%. This benefits middle-income earners most.
Tax credits directly reduce your tax bill. Budget 2026 increased the Personal Credit from €1,875 to €1,950 and the Employee Credit from €1,875 to €1,950 — an extra €150 total for most workers.
Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) is 4% for most employees. From October 2026, this increases to 4.35%. A weekly credit tapering system reduces the impact for lower earners.
Your marginal rate (tax on €1 more income) can be up to 52% (40% PAYE + 8% USC + 4% PRSI). Your effective rate (total tax ÷ total income) is usually much lower — see the Marginal Rate chart above.
If you have children, Budget 2026 increases Child Benefit from €140 to €150/month per child and the Home Carer Credit from €1,800 to €2,000. Enter your children count in More options to see the full impact.
